The Yadkin Valley Volunteer Fire Department was organized in the mid 1960's as Station 2 of the Patterson Volunteer Fire
Department. In order to establish an insurance rating district in our local community, it was necessary for the departments
to be seperated. The YVFD was incorporated in 1975 and began operating as a seperate fire department. The first fire chief
was Mr. J.E. Coffey.
Our response district covers 47 square miles in Northeastern Caldwell County, NC. Our 5 mile and extended 6 mile insurance
district is a ISO Class 9 and the remaining portion of our response district is a ISO Class 10.
We operate out of one fire station located at 2815 NC Highway 268, Lenoir and our station is equipped with 2 Engines, 1
Pumper Tanker, 1 Tanker and a Brush / Medical Response truck.
Our department is financially supported by a local fire tax. Residents and buisnesses within our response district currently
pay .07 cents per $100 valuation on real property including vehicles. All fire departments within Caldwell County are
supported through a local tax. Each department's tax rate varies according to financial need. Our FY07 tax revenue was
approximately $ 54,000. We also conduct fundraisers and accept tax-deductible donations.
Our district is 100% rural water. We currently have no municipal water system within our response district. We rely on the
Yadkin River and local streams, creeks, ponds and automatic mutual-aid from neighborhing fire departments. On any
structure related dispatch, ie: fire alarm, structure fire, etc., we have automatic mutual-aid with the Patterson, Kings Creek
and Valmead Fire Department's. The N.C. Forest Service also responds automatically on any reported woods, brush, grass
or related type of dispatch.
